I'm a 42-year-old feminist living in Dayton, Ohio with my awesome husband, needy dog, and vengeful cat. I identify as a Democrat, Sci-Fi lover, technology geek, TV fan, and reader.
I'm a quintessential member of Generation-x as I represent with many of things that sets us apart from boomers millennials:
I was a child of the unions. My dad works at a Gm plant when that was the American dream. We always had money for vacation, clothing and dance lessons; and I grew up in a white suburb with good schools. The decline of the unions and beginning of real income rollback coincided with my coming of age.
I'm a first generation college graduate. Gen-X saw marked increased in post secondary education, especially among women. I went to a state school on a debate scholarship which molded me into a researcher and data hound. In my first year of college, I read about 20 hour of newspapers, books, and journals per week for debate. By my third year, I was up to 30+ hours research, and I mostly used Lexis-Nexus. Gen-X didn't grow up having computers like the millennials, we grew up alongside computers as one might a puppy.
I represent a change in demographics that millennials grabbed onto. I choose not to have children; I do not participate in a church; I want a better social safety-net provided by government; and I don't mind paying more taxes to make it happen. Gen-X is more divided than other generations. There are many X-ers who ended up more Conservative than their parents, especially the older members of our generation.
I love millennials! No generation exists in a vacuum. Millennials are the logical result of Gen-X. We wanted you to have knowledge, choices, good books, love, and safety. I was a latch key kid who watched my little brother after school and during the summer. My friends and I got in very little trouble considering the opportunities for mischief.
I hope you enjoy my thoughts on Gen-X. This is blog, not a new source. I understand that my views are shaped by who I am: a privileged, middle-class, white girl from a swing state. While I'll try to be inclusive when writing, my voice will be clear.
